Dear Spokane Community,

At a pivotal moment for Spokane, the Spokane Business Association gathered leaders, candidates, and community members to take a stand for public safety, accountability, and compassion through the 75% Leadership Pledge.

Supported by 75% of Spokane voters, this pledge calls on City Council candidates to commit to restoring ordinances that protect public spaces — prohibiting encampments near schools, parks, and child care centers, while guiding those in need toward services when available and appropriate.

This press conference wasn’t about politics. It was about principle — reaffirming that Spokane’s future depends on the courage to act, the compassion to serve, and the leadership to follow through.

Lessons from Boise hold hope for Spokane.

In my recent guest commentary, “Lessons from Boise, Hope for Spokane,” I reflected on former Boise Mayor David Bieter’s message to more than 700 Spokane business and community leaders: the health of our economy and the health of our community are inseparable. Boise’s success in addressing homelessness and addiction wasn’t luck — it was persistence, policy, and partnership.

Bieter reminded us that cities must balance compassion with enforcement — that allowing people to suffer on the streets is not tolerance, it’s indifference. Boise proved that accountability and access to help can coexist, and that real progress comes when government, business, and citizens pull together in what he called a “barn raising.”

If Boise could turn the corner, Spokane can too — but only if we summon the collective will to make it our highest priority.
